Located on the Pacific coast, just south of Mexico’s Todos Santos in Baja California Sur, the Palm Orchard is a 21-acre, master-planned boutique development on approximately one mile of untouched beachfront. Two of Baja’s most sought-after surf breaks are directly north and south of the property.

The developers of the Palm Orchard, Wind River Land Company, are mindfully developing seven small, uniquely different boutique neighborhoods within The Orchard. Each of the neighborhoods will have its own identity, while maintaining a consistent look and feel by applying the same building methods and materials throughout. All materials will be sourced locally and throughout Mexico for authenticity. Homes will be designed to blend into the existing oasis of 30,000 exotic plants and palm trees currently on site. Construction of Phase 1 is slated to begin in July, with deliveries happening late summer 2011 through early 2012.

The Palm Orchard? Never heard of that, either?

There is a strong Calgary connection to all of this. The real Hotel California is owned by former Calgary resident Debbie Stewart; and The Palm Orchard is being developed by Jim Brinkerhoff , whose relatives operate Brinkerhoff Drilling in Calgary.

Once upon a time, say about 1972, Cabo San Lucas was a sleepy little fishing town at the southern tip of Baja California. Then came the paved highway, the international airport, the marina, the golf courses, the raucous bars and well-heeled retreats. At the newest and perhaps fanciest, Capella Pedregal, suites this spring start at a cool $675 per night.

In Cabo, you just might score the spring break you’ll never forget — or the one you won’t remember.

And then there’s Todos Santos, still small, still drowsy at most hours, wedged between the mountains and sea about 45 miles north of Cabo.

Despite being only about an hour north of the Los Cabos area, El Pescadero is nothing like the tip of the Baja. While the Cabo resort corridor bulges with deluxe vacation-home developments and popular nightclubs, the small town of El Pescadero — just south of Todos Santos — is often described as an agricultural oasis, full of farms growing tomatoes, peppers, avocados and other crops. One new development hoping to draw second-home hunters away from Cabo is the Palm Orchard, a 20-acre beachfront swath of palm trees and tropical plants where 43 new houses and 15 condominiums are planned.

In recent decades, Todos Santos’ colonial buildings and ethereal light have exerted a magnetic pull on painters, sculptors, artisans and intellectuals; it is said to have more galleries per capita than any other town in Mexico. The town is 2 miles inland, but a string of seductive beaches, including surfing favorites Palm Beach and Pedrito, is minutes away. All invite strolling, sunbathing, surf fishing and whale watching, but most are subject to treacherous currents and waves. Save your swimming for Playa Los Cerritos and (with caution) Playa Punta Lobos.

In its brief four months, the still-expanding Rancho Pescadero hotel — a dude ranch for very sophisticated “dudes” — has garnered raves from everyone from Travel+Leisure to Chowhound. Nearby, the Palm Orchard is another new development taking shape within, oddly enough, a working palm orchard. It will add no more than 50 homes and have a small rental pool that will operate as a hotel.

Jim Brinkerhoff, a developer from Edwards, has already tapped into this market with his beautiful Palm Orchard property. This Pacific ocean-front spot is nearly 20 acres of pristine, specimen palm trees and plants. As he develops this next-generation, residential resort, he’ll be developing a lifestyle as well.

This is the town Laguna Beach always wanted to be: a seaside artist retreat steeped in an historic Old California setting. (California’s history is rooted in these small Baja California villages.) Everywhere you turn, there’s a patch of antiquity waiting to be sketched: the mission church facing a centuries-old plaza, ruins of an old sugarcane mill, weather-beaten adobe walls painted in vibrant colors. “Todos Santos has a quality of light equal to Taos or the High Andes in Peru,” says Jill Logan, an artist who owns one of the 15 art galleries here (more per capita than any town in Mexico).

And, like everyone else in the business these days, times are tough. But Brinkerhoff thinks he’s on track to help redefine the resort business.

Brinkerhoff — who lives near Edwards — and several partners are working on a project in Baja Mexico, “Palm Orchard.” Plans for the 20-acre property near the town of Todos Santos include just 29 homes, most with price tags of $1 million or less.
